The Sony Xperia 5 II is a smaller, less-expensive version of the Xperia 1 II. It offers most of the powerful features in a more comfortable and pocketable size. It’s an ideal choice for media lovers, gamers, and budding photographers and cinematographers. The Sony Xperia 5 II price is $949 / £799 (around AU$1,350), and it comes in a single configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Display and design

Similar to Xperia 5 Mark I, Xperia 5 Mark II still retains a 6.1″ Full HD+ OLED display that comes in a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio. The bezel of the phone makes it obvious that it’s a sony smartphone. To add, Sony officially confirms Xperia 5 II as the first phone from Sony with a higher refresh rate.

Despite the giant build, the slim waist of the Xperia 5 II makes the phone comfortable to hold and use in your hand. It’s 5mm to 10mm narrower than most other modern phones. This phone is covered in Gorilla Glass 6. It’s rated IP65/68 for protection from dust and water. On the right edge of the phone is a volume button and also a power-button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner. Sony stuck a dedicated Google Assistant button below the power key, followed by a dedicated camera button closest to the bottom edge.

The phone’s USB-C port is on the bottom of the phone and the 3.5mm headphone jack is on the top. There’s also 360 Reality Audio hardware decoding to optimize your music experience. The back of the phone is chic, having a camera block in the top-left corner. The display here has a 120Hz refresh rate which is sure to provide you a smooth experience.

Camera

The phone designed for gamers and photographers, as already mentioned above, Sony Xperia 5 II excels in the Camera part. There’s a single front camera and three rear cameras at the back. The three rear cameras are all 12MP shooters: a main camera with a 24mm lens, an ultra-wide camera with a 16mm lens, and a telephoto one with a 70mm lens. And these camera performances are just wow.

Sony claims that the device is capable of recording slow-mo videos at 120fps and 4K HDR videos up to 60fps. The single 8MP front-facing camera is capable of producing satisfying selfie shots. It uses a 1/4″ sensor with an aperture of f/2.0.

Battery

Sony Xperia 5 II is backed by a 4,000 mAh battery as that of Xperia 1 Mark II. That’s a huge power cell to a phone of this size. The phone accompanies fast charging capability. But like the recent phones of sony, it lacks the wireless charging system. You’ll be able to get 18W charging with the brick included in the box, which can get your phone to 50% charge in just 30 minutes, as Sony claims.

The phone also supports even snappier 21W fast-charging if you are ready to buy it separately. Sony says wireless charging has been replaced by a layer of graphene that dissipates the heat and stops the chipset from getting too warm

Performance

Sony Xperia 5 II is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 (not the 865 Plus tho) and 8GB of RAM. The phone’s storage is expandable with microSD cards. Since the phone is designed for gaming as well, you can find the device fast and fluid. You can manually set the parameters like refresh rate, touch sampling rate, and motion blur for the game you wish to play. Not just games but also apps perform without shuttering and which is great. To put it simply, Sony Xperia5 II is a performance monster.

The phone comes with 5G built-in and runs on Android 10. Android 11 update is confirmed for this phone, although it’s unclear when it’ll land. Sony also includes its own UI overlay on all its smartphones, and it’s here too.
